EPA Finalizes Plan to Implement Guidelines To Reduce Emissions at Hospital Incinerators

The Environmental Protection Agency will implement emissions guidelines for hospital, medical, and infectious waste incinerators through a federal plan for states that do not yet have approved plans for those sources, according to a final rule released April 5. The federal plan implements amended emissions guidelines EPA issued in October 2009. EPA expects the guidelines to reduce the industry's emissions of mercury by 89 percent, hydrogen chloride by 85 percent, lead by 74 percent, and dioxins and furans by 68 percent (74 Fed. Reg. 51,368).
