A federal court has rejected another attempt by environmental activists to block tree removals in a Colorado skiing area within the National Forest System (Ark Initiative v. Tidwell, 2014 BL 228414, D.D.C., No. 1:14-cv-633, 8/18/14).The plaintiffs argued that the U.S. Forest Service violated the National Environmental Policy Act by approving an Aspen Skiing Co. plan to use 80 acres in the Snowmass Mountain Ski Area for a new ski trail without an adequate environmental analysis and impact assessment. They also argued that Colorado's exclusion of ski areas from "roadless" designation-and the Forest Service's acceptance of that exclusion-violated the Wilderness Act.
