Federal court dismisses challenge to Turkey Point license renewal

A federal appeals court dismissed last month a suit filed byenvironmental groups challenging NRC's approval of operating licenserenewals for Florida Power & Light’s Turkey Point-3 and -4.The court documents of the March 4 ruling were released byNRC April 4.The renewal was the first so-called subsequent license renewalapproved by NRC to extend the operating license for a power reactor toallow it to operate for up to 80 years. Most US power reactors have hadtheir initial 40-year operating licenses extended for 20 years, and a fewmore have received subsequent renewals since Turkey Point.
