State Approves Updated Climate Strategy, Low-Carbon Economy, Looks Beyond 2020

California air quality officials updated May 22 the state's strategy for meeting its ambitious greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets and transi-tioning the state toward a low-carbon economy. Approved by the California Air Resources Board at a meeting in Sacramento, the document is the agency's first effort in updating its initial road map, called a " scoping plan," for implementing the Global Warming Solutions Act of 2006 (A.B. 32). A.B. 32 requires the state to cut statewide carbon emissions to 1990 levels by 2020. The first scoping plan, which the agency adopted in 2008, outlined dozens of measures, many already taken up-including an economywide cap-and-trade program, low-carbon fuel standard, advanced clean-vehicle program, renewable energy standard and dozens of other already implemented measures the state says puts it on track to achieve the 2020 emissions reduction mandate.
