EPA Agrees to Reconsider 2013 Mandate On Cellulosic Ethanol as Production Lags

The Environmental Protection Agency said it will reconsider the 2013 cellulosic ethanol blending mandate after production failed to meet the agency's projections. The reconsideration comes in response to petitions from the American Petroleum Institute and the American Fuels & Petrochemical Manufacturers. The EPA announced its intention to reconsider the cellulosic blending requirement in Jan. 23 letters to the two petroleum groups. The 2013 renewable fuel standard had mandated that 6 million gallons of cellulosic ethanol be blended into the gasoline supply in 2013, well below the 1 billion gallons set out in the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 (Pub. L. No. 110-140). Only 353,673 gallons of cellulosic ethanol were produced in 2013 as of Dec. 7, according to EPA data.
