Paris Talks Honing in on Temperature Limit; Survival of Decarbonization Goal in Doubt

The global goal to keep temperature rise under 2 degrees Celsius appears to be within the grasp of negotiators attempting to craft the first truly global climate change accord in Paris, but an early casualty may be a related push to decarbonize world economies over the coming decades. Most negotiators and observers expect the goal to hold temperatures from rising 2 degrees Celsius (3.6 degrees Fahrenheit) this century compared to pre-industrial times to be a key element to the final deal they hope to reach at the end of the summit, which is slated to conclude Dec. 11.
