California Proposes Lamp Standards For Commercial, Residential Lighting

More energy-efficient track lighting would be required in retail stores, hospitals, museums and other commercial facilities, under standards the California Energy Commission proposed Oct. 19. The proposal targets small-diameter directional lamps used largely in commercial facilities, but it also would establish standards for new light-emitting diodes, or LEDs, to replace screw-in incandescent and compact fluorescent (CFLs) bulbs found in homes. By Jan. 1, 2018, small-direction lamps 2.25 inches or less in diameter would need to have an efficacy of 80 lumens per watt or greater and last for at least 25,000 hours, according to the proposal. The proposed standards to improve LEDs would be based on the Environmental Protection Agency's Energy Star requirements and phased in two steps, beginning Jan. 1, 2017, and Jan. 1, 2019.
