California Adopts Energy-Efficiency Standards For Directional Lamps, Track Lighting, Homes

California has set the nation's first energy efficiency standards for small lamps used in track lighting and general purpose light-emitting diodes, or LEDs. Approved by the California Energy Commission Jan. 27, the standards require directional lamps 2.25 inches or less in diameter, beginning Jan. 1, 2018, to have an efficacy of 80 lumens per watt or greater and last for at least 25,000 hours. The small lamps are used in track lighting in retail stores, hospitals, museums and other commercial settings. The new standards for LEDs are based on the Environmental Protection Agency's Energy Star requirements. Under rules to be phased in between Jan. 1. 2018, and July 1, 2019, LEDs must have a minimum lifetime requirement of 10,000 hours, or 10 years in the typical home. Also the standards limit the amount of power a connected LED can use in a standby mode.
