Areas in 28 States Will Be Addressed In 2016 Round of Sulfur Dioxide Designations

The Environmental Protection Agency has identified areas in 28 states that meet the criteria for inclusion in the next round of attainment designations for sulfur dioxide, which will be completed by July 2, 2016, under a settlement with environmental organizations. The EPA March 20 sent letters to environmental commissioners in Texas, Michigan, Indiana and other states informing them of counties in their states that have very large pollution sources that meet a threshold for inclusion in the next round of area designations for the 2010 national ambient air quality standards for sulfur dioxide. The agency also identified six counties that have newly monitored violations of the 75 parts per billion sulfur dioxide standard and will be included in the next round of designations.
