Offshore Arctic Standards for Structures Get Support in Study of Threats Posed by Ice

Existing standards for offshore structures, such as those used for oil and natural gas drilling and production, are sufficient to cope with the high pressures of Arctic sea ice, according to a study by the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement. The study will be discussed April 28 along with other research at the Arctic Offshore Regulators Forum at Interior Department headquarters. The two-day forum is designed to inform regulators from six Arctic nations. The BSEE study was recently completed in a partnership with the University of Alaska to supplement the ISO 19906 standard for offshore structures of the oil and gas industries.
