DOE Awards $220 Million to Labs, Industry In Initiative to Modernize Electricity Grid

The Energy Department is awarding $220 million over three years to the department's national laboratories and partners to improve the resiliency, reliability and security of the nation's electricity grid. The funding will go to 14 national laboratories across the country-including the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, the National Energy Technology Laboratory and the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory-as well as to private industry and state and local government agencies. "Grid-modernization efforts will produce a more efficient electric grid that integrates more renewable energy resources. It will lower costs, improve services and reduce greenhouse gas emissions," Lynn Orr, DOE's undersecretary for science and energy, told reporters in a Jan. 14 phone call. Orr added that a modernized grid will help prevent power outages and enable utility companies to respond more quickly when outages do occur.
