Duke Energy, TVA Closing Coal Ash Ponds Despite EPA Efforts

Duke Energy and the Tennessee Valley Authority both will close ponds storing the toxic sludge left after burning coal, despite an EPA plan to give states and utilities more leeway in deciding when to clean up those sites.The Environmental Protection Agency will take public comments at an April 24 hearing on a proposal that would revise coal ash disposal regulations set in 2010 after 5.4 million cubic yards of material spilled from a storage pond at the TVA's Kingston Fossil plant in 2008.
