Claims against a North Carolina hog farm for pollution abatement are not considered debts under bankruptcy code, a federal court ruled. The farmers cannot be released from liability for a debt or obligation related to alleged violations of the Clean Water and Resource Conservation and Recovery Acts in federal district court because the environmental groups suing them aren't seeking cleanup costs or other payments, a bankruptcy judge wrote.
