Economics and biodiversity conservation in the developing world

Brian Walker has neatly summarized the case for further emphasis on conserving biological diversity through sustainable utilization. This is a message some of us have been advancing for some time (e.g. Barbier et al., 1990; Pearce and Moran, 1994; Pearce, 1999). The fojlowing propositions highlight some of the reasons for pursuing this approach and some of the problems that arise.
