Exploring the Unknown Northern Polar Regions

The Arctic is America's land of contrasts. Short, glorious summers of endless sunshine precede long winters of darkness and punishing cold. Conducting research in this environment provides unique challenges and intellectual rewards. For almost 50 years, scientists with the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management's Environmental Studies Program have worked with Alaska Native communities and other state, federal and international agencies to better understand and preserve this breathtaking landscape and its unique ecosystems. Over that time, the bureau has invested nearly $500 million in Arctic studies and produced more than 1,000 technical reports and peer-reviewed publications.
