The global carbon market is dramatically bucking the global downturn. The sector grew by 124% in the first half of this year in terms of volume and by 22% in terms of value. Around 4.1 Gt CO_2e was traded in the first half of 2009 taking the financial value of the global market to €46B in the first six months of the year. "Prices are lower due to the economic slowdown but volumes are much higher as many depressed industry sectors in Europe have decided to trade their surplus carbon allowances carbon sector," said Henrik Hasselknippe, of Point Carbon Trading Analytics & Research.
