International perspectives on suburbanization: a post-suburban world?

At the dawn of the 21st century, suburbanization has become a global phenomenon (Bruegman, 2006) and it is most likely that for the majority of metropolitan residents around the world the urban future will be, indeed, a suburban one (Hall and Pfeiffer, 2000). Suburbs have not only grown, but they have changed. Suburban environments today juxtapose exclusive gated compounds, modest working-class communities, thriving shopping centers, crowded squatter settlements, and sleek high-tech office and logistics parks.
