In late 2009 the United Kingdom (UK) Labour Party changed its mind on the subject of electoral reform; having previously been committed to first past the post (FPTP), although some senior members, past and present, were prepared to consider alternatives, both the Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, and the Secretary of State for Justice, Jack Straw, committed the party to hold a referendum on changing from FPTP to the alternative vote (AV).
