"Yes, we can!"rnAs the 'politics of change' swept across the United States in the fall of 2008, the dances around gender and race could not have been more confusing. From adamant disavowals to overdetermined speeches, the politics of both race and gender seem only to grow more confusing and further overwrought as the country inaugurates its first ever African-American man as president. By proclaiming a victory over the ugly divisiveness of identity politics, the country seems to be entering an even more bizarre period of self-satisfaction in the alleged fulfillment of the Enlightenment dream-or, even more self-congratulatory, of Martin Luther King Jr's dream-of equality. But by pushing identity politics yet further underground, this will likely only exacerbate the still-pervasive racism and sexism in the US. Therefore, as our need to expose them becomes yet more pressing, a turn to other iterations of logics of domination may become fruitful resources for the politics of resistance.
