INDUSTRY EYES SCIENTIFIC REVIEW TO FIGHT EPA FINDING ON NAPHTHALENE

The American Petroleum Institute (API) is planning a public-private scientific symposium to highlight alternative views regarding the risks posed by the jet fuel additive naphthalene, a ubiquitous groundwater contaminant that a recent draft EPA risk assessment calls a "likely carcinogen." If EPA's draft assessment is finalized, it would likely initiate a host of new safety, health and cleanup standards and significantly expand cleanup liability at contaminated industry and military sites. But EPA is still re-evaluating the science used in the assessment and may conduct an unusual "uncertainty analysis" to outline the range of potency estimates for the widely used fuel additive.
