Science Advisors Urge Epa To Keep Perchlorate On Contaminant List

EPA's Science Advisory Board (SAB) is urging the agency to keep the rocket fuel component perchlorate on the agency's list of pollutants that may require future regulation, even as the agency hurries to finalize its controversial decisions to exempt perchlorate from strict Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) standards. SAB recommends that perchlorate and three other chemicals "should be a high priority for consideration by the Agency" for inclusion in its draft third contaminant candidate list (CCL3) "because there is a higher degree of certainty about their toxicity, occurrence, and treatability," according to a report reviewing EPA's draft CCL3 which the science advisors approved Dec. 16 during a retreat in Annapolis, MD.
