EPA is planning to hold an expert consultation to provide advice on how the agency should respond to recommendations from the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) as it assesses the cumulative risks of six phthalates - a review that will likely grapple with warnings from the Academy and others that any cumulative assessment will underestimate risk if it does not include other chemicals that also act upon the same target organs. According to a Nov. 15 Federal Register notice, a contractor will "conduct an external peer consultation workshop to: (1) Review the recommendations for evaluation of the cumulative mixtures risk of phthalates as set forth in the [NAS] report "Phthalates and Cumulative Risk Assessment: The Tasks Ahead"; and (2) propose additional methods and approaches, not already captured in the 2008 NAS report, that may facilitate the assessment of risk(s) associated with exposure to cumulative mixtures of the six selected phthalates."
