EPA is crafting guidance addressing the compatibility of underground storage tanks (USTs) with gasoline containing up to 15 percent ethanol (E15), an effort that appears aimed at addressing concerns that increased use of the fuel could lead to more leaks because the fuel is more corrosive than current blends.rnGas retailers say they hope the guide will allow them to continue to use their existing tanks to store the higher ethanol blend EPA recently approved for sale, rather than install costly new storage tanks. But if EPA's guidance falls short they plan to continue to ask Congress to address the issue, retailers say.
