Industry, DOD Oppose Adding Vapor Intrusion To Superfund Listing Criteria

Industry groups and the Department of Defense (DOD) are urging EPA to refrain from adding vapor intrusion from underground sources of contamination as a pathway for determining what sites to list on Superfund's National Priorities List (NPL), saying the NPL process is not well-suited to addressing toxic vapor sites. "The Superfund NPL process with its lengthy studies, protracted investigations, and highly adversarial process is not at all well suited to addressing most vapor intrusion sites," according to comments recently filed with EPA by an attorney representing the RCRA Corrective Action Project and the Superfund Settlements Project, two industry groups subject to EPA's waste management and cleanup requirements.
