Risk Group Pushes EPA To Drop Short-Term Exposure Risk Of TCE

Industry officials and representatives of a risk assessment group reviewing EPA's cleanup policy related to trichloroethylene (TCE) are urging the agency to drop regulation of short-term exposure to the solvent, arguing in a recent meeting with agency officials that EPA's intent to protect against cardiac birth defects is based on flawed science. But members of the Alliance for Risk Assessment (ARA) who attended the Nov. 6 meeting said during a Nov. 14 conference call that some EPA officials appeared defensive during the meeting, suggesting it is unlikely EPA will back away from using the studies that point to a developmental risk from TCE.
