The Defense Department (DOD) is close to releasing a highly anticipated draft analysis on the lifecycle greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and other impacts from the fiiels it purchases that contain carbon-intense Canadian tar sands, which could indicate how the government may assess the impacts of the controversial Keystone XL pipeline. Both industry and environmentalists are eager to see just how comprehensive DOD is in evaluating the GHG impacts of its fuels in part because it could set a precedent for how officials will assess the impacts of the fuels when weighing whether to approve the pipeline, which is expected to transport the heavy crude from Canada, regardless of which candidate wins election in November.
