Keystone XL Opponents Shift Focus To Health Effects of Tar Sands Development

Sens. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) and Sheldon White-house (D-R.I.) sent a letter to Secretary of State John Kerry on Feb. 26 asking him to conduct a detailed study of the health risks associated with tar sands oil before deciding whether to approve the Keystone XL pipeline. Boxer, chairman of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, and Whitehouse, a leading advocate for addressing climate change, said the State Department final environmental review of the project released Jan. 31 was inadequate on the subject of public health effects.
