Growers Press FDA To Drop Use Of EPA Water Criteria In Produce Rule

Produce industry groups and their congressional supporters, along with some foreign governments, are pressing the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to drop its plan to require irrigation water for some crops to meet EPA's water quality criteria for bacteria, saying the limits are not meant for irrigation and their application could violate trade rules. In recent comments on the proposal, the National Onion Association urges FDA to withdraw its use of EPA's water quality criteria, and to substitute a standard based on disability-associated life years — a measure of disease frequency and severity used by the World Health Organization.
