API Urges EPA To Narrow Scope Of Drilling Equipment Covered By NSPS

The American Petroleum Institute (API) is urging EPA to revise and narrow the scope of drilling equipment subject to the agency's new source performance standard (NSPS) air rules for the oil and gas sector, pushing EPA to expand changes to the rule beyond extended compliance deadlines and limited exemptions the agency is proposing. EPA March 29 announced it would grant reconsideration on a limited set of issues related to the NSPS controls for storage vessels in response to requests from industry, and took comments on its proposed changes though May 13. The proposed revisions were seen as a win for the drilling sector, which argued that the agency vastly underestimated the amount of sources covered in the rule and warned of massive costs in complying with the NSPS.
