A Scientific Advisory Panel (SAP) in a new report has backed the general outlines of EPA's proposed new framework for assessing pesticides' risks to pollinators - a tiered procedure that will aim to account for more exposure pathways and provide quantitative risk estimates - while suggesting fixes that could boost the framework's conservatism. EPA has yet to respond to the panel's report, but the agency has acknowledged that its traditional assessments have failed to account for the risks that systemic pesticides, which draw up the chemicals into plants' leaves, stems and pollen, pose to pollinating insects, namely honeybees.
