EPA Finalizing Guide For Post-Closure Care Of Hazardous Waste Facilities

EPA expects to finalize guidance this summer that would set criteria for extending or readjusting the 30-year post-closure period in which hazardous waste landfill operators must monitor a site for potential releases, following pressure from state regulators urging EPA to address the issue as many waste facilities near their 30-year post-closure care (PCC) period governed by existing regulations. The guidance is expected to offer criteria regulators can consider when extending, shortening or ending the PCC period for hazardous waste land disposal facilities under the Resource Conservation & Recovery Act's (RCRA) Subtitle C, which regulates hazardous waste facilities, according to slides presented to state officials by Sonya Sasseville, acting director for program implementation and information division in EPA's Resource Conservation & Recovery Office.
