Several EPA regional officials are opposing a preliminary proposal by headquarters staff to drop the long-stalled pretreatment rule for dental amalgam, according to internal agency emails obtained by Inside EPA, with staff from at least four regions and the agency's toxics office voicing "strong objection" to the plan. The idea to drop the amalgam rule came with "no advance notice to the [rule's] workgroup that this was coming," according to a Jan. 28 email from a Region IX water staffer, adding, "I expect several Regions will strongly oppose the proposed plan if it is presented as discussed yesterday."
