摘要

Environmentalists are urging EPA to assess the water quality impacts of historic, existing and foreseeable future hardrock mining in three states bordering Lake Superior, building on advocates' push for greater federal regulation of the mining sector in the Great Lakes region due to their concern that the industry is harming water quality. "Despite the risk to national and international waters posed by the expansion of mining and sulfide mining in particular, there has been no comprehensive assessment of the cumulative effects of mining on the singular water resources and ecological values of the Lake Superior Basin," write 59 environmental groups in Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin in a Dec. 16 letter to EPA Region V, which includes Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, and Wisconsin.
