EPA says its new on-road emission tests, launched after the agency determined that Volkswagen had installed illegal nitrogen oxide (NOx) control "defeat devices" in older model cars, have found that the company made broader use of the devices than once believed, again underscoring the company's effort to limit greenhouse gas emissions and improve efficiency at the expense of increased releases of the ozone precursor. The new allegations - contained in a Nov. 2 notice of violation (NOV) from EPA and a Nov. 2 letter from the California Air Resources Board (CARB) - are levied against newer, larger, 3.0-liter diesel engine vehicles from model years (MY) 2015 and 2016 including luxury sport utility vehicles.
