The Obama administration's proposed "phase 2" medium and heavy-duty truck greenhouse gas (GHG) rules are drawing a range of reaction, from air regulators and environmentalists seeking to speed and strengthen its mandates, to trailer manufacturers charging it is costly and ineffective and truck and engine groups calling for the proposals' targets and timetables to be retained. The diverse views, which generally reiterate the groups' initial statements, emerged at an Aug. 18 public hearing on the proposed rules held in Long Beach, CA, the second such meeting since they were issued in July.
