EPA Draws Wide Ranging Criticisms Over Lead-Paint Dust Cleanup Efforts

EPA's efforts to address lead-paint dust in residential settings are facing wide-ranging criticisms, with its Inspector General (IG) charging the program lacks goals or ways to track progress and its children's health advisors and environmentalists questioning why the agency has yet to update its lead dust clearance standards for contractors. In a report released Sept. 9, the IG concludes that EPA is "not effectively implementing" the Lead-Based Paint Renovation, Repair and Painting Rule (RRP) program, finding that the agency "does not have sufficient controls to assess RRP program effectiveness and progress toward goals."
