Pilbara iron ore expansion planned

Another major iron ore mine and railway are being planned for Western Australia's Pilbara region. Earlier this year the Fortescue Metals Group lodged an application with Australia's National Competition Council to have BHP Billiton's Mt Newman rail line declared available for third party access. Fortescue is planning a $1.85 billion iron ore mine, rail and port system and wants to use the Mt Newman line to create a 500km continuous rail loop by connecting its planned rail line at Port Hedland with the Mt Newman line. The circuit is estimated to have an annual haulage capacity of 500Mt.
