Commitment and coordination needed to address Australia's engineering skills shortage

The current debate about the growing skills shortages in Australia must not be confined to shortfalls in traditional trades areas. Severe shortages are already being seen in the professional engineering skills sector that drives opportunities for many trades jobs. In five years time the number of engineering graduates from our universities will be the same as a decade ago. The erosion of Australia's engineering expertise is compounded by the knowledge that around 1800 eligible students were turned away from engineering courses last year due to a lack of government-funded places.
