摘要

A skill shortage world wide is creating concern for productivity outcomes. For more than ten years the Australian Foundry Institute has been lobbying the federal government to be aware of the enormous skill shortage in the metal casting industry. This was to no avail. With Australia generating 7 billion DOLLARS in sales annually, skill shortage is being addressed. The Federal Government set up Cooperative Research Centres (CRC s) in 1990 to form links with Universities. At that time the focus was to produce PHD students. Now, in finally recognising the skill shortage in the metal casting industry in Australia, the 56 CRC's are expanding the linkage to vocational institutes in a bid to ease skill shortages and to establish career paths for technicians.
