My wife may and I arrived in Phuket on Christmas Eve for our holiday and had a most enjoyable day and a half in Club Med at Kata Beach. On Christmas night the resort had a party which continued late into the night. We were woken up at about 8am by an earth tremor. I counted what I thought were about 26 cycles of vibration before it stopped. It seemed to go on forever. Initially I thought it was wind, but one look outside convinced me it was an earthquake. We went off to breakfast. No one seemed concerned. By 10am, we were at the practice tee on the golf course about 80m-100m from the beach. It was a beautiful day. We did not see the first wave hit and only heard screaming from some people at the beach. We went over to the beach and could see chairs, umbrellas and rubbish everywhere. There were a few people being carried away. The beach sellers were trying to collect their stock. The sea had receded a long way.
