Meeting energy demand responsibly

The global climate does not care about what Australia does about reducing its carbon dioxide emissions, but Australia can help develop globally useful technologies to share with other countries, according to Dr Ziggy Zwitkowski, chair of the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation. Speaking at the 2008 Engineering Leadership Conference in Perth last month, he said even though Australia's greenhouse gas emissions per capita are among the highest in the world, the actual amount is insignificant in comparison with more populated countries. Australia's contribution is less than 2% and proportionately falling. Therefore any solutions towards reducing greenhouse gas emissions must be global, he said.
