One of most ambitious shipbuilding ventures ever undertaken in Australia was the Collins class submarine project, the country's largest, most expensive (more than $6 billion) and possibly most controversial military project to date. The definitive account of this project is intimately analysed by authors Peter Yule and Derek Woolner in their recently published book The Collins class submarine story: steel, spies and spin. Yule is a research fellow in the history department at Melbourne University while Woolner is a visiting fellow at the Strategic and Defence Studies Centre at the Australian National University. Their research for the 360 page text is based on interviews with more than 130 key people and Australian Defence Department and Australian Navy archives.
