摘要

A Team From The Victorian Division of Young Engineers Australia (YEA) won a debate in Melbourne last month, arguing that cars should be banned from the CBD. The debate was part of the Sustainable Living Festival, a three-day event organised by the non-profit Sustainable Living Foundation. The young engineers competed against a team from the Environment Institute of Australia and New Zealand. They had to argue that Melbourne should ban cars from its CBD. According to YEA Victoria committee member and debate organiser Kenn Beer, there were about 200 people in the audience. Comedian and writer Catherine Deveny was the moderator. "The debate was red hot as Shell chemical engineer Darren Pace took the microphone. Not intimidated by the live streaming of the debate on Channel 31, he proceeded to strip down to his riding lycra to reinforce the aesthetic advantages of riding a bike," Beer said. He said the judges felt the debate was a close contest. In the end, the audience had to determine the winner by applauding.
