Early last month, the New Zealand South Island city of Christchurch and the Canterbury region suffered significant damage due to an earthquake. The magnitude 7.1 earthquake occurred at 4:36am NZST on Saturday 4 September. Its epicentre was 40km west of Christchurch city and the initiation of faulting was at a depth of 10km.
