摘要

The current program for professional development requires too much work outside an engineer's normal workload, a survey conducted by the Young Engineers Australia National Committee has found. The survey of the engineering profession was conducted earlier this year to elicit views on being a chartered professional engineer. Questions asked included the respondents perceived value of becoming chartered, and the level of active interest in pursuing the status. The survey was available online via Survey Monkey and the link was distributed via Engineers Australia mailing lists. Recipients were also encouraged to further distribute the link via their own networks. Respondents did not have to be members of Engineers Australia. An overwhelming 5500 responses were received. Workshops on chartered status, held in each of the Divisions, were also conducted. The survey results indicate that many respondents believe the professional development program does not fit with the normal work engineers are carrying out. Many also saw no benefit in becoming chartered, with respondents commenting that they could ably progress and work as an engineer without it.
