Call for equal numbers 'so passe'

Once again Engineers Australia magazine (August) featured the well-worn theme of offering a mea culpa for our engineering profession failing to achieve gender equality. In one article, we were informed that the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering (ATSE) is to take steps to ensure that one third of all new Fellows should be female. If fellowship is conferred by merit, this can only mean that some deserving men might be refused in favour of some less deserving women.
