Gender imbalance in engineering?

In reference to the recent EA survey of working environment and careers, which implies the gender imbalance in engineering may be due to workplace discrimination, I ask the question: "What is the root cause of the gender imbalance?" Until this is answered we won't know if this is a result of discrimination or if there are other reasons. My own observation is that women engineers are generally better than their male counterparts but are smaller in number. The two might go hand in hand and the average quality of female engineers could drop if numbers rise.
