An airport by any other name

Recent media reports have speculated over the official naming of the future Badgerys Creek Airport in Sydney's West, with favourites ranging from engineers to aviators and politicians. Prime minister Tony Abbott would like to see the airport named after civil engineer Dr John Bradfield who oversaw the building of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Bradfield also designed Sydney's City Circle railway, Brisbane's Story Bridge and the Burrinjuck and Cataract dams in NSW. The Bradfield Highway which crosses the harbour bridge is named after him. The choice to name the airport after Bradfield is backed by NSW premier Mike Baird and state opposition leader John Robertson. Federal opposition leader Bill Shorten suggested Badgerys Creek airport could take on Gough Whitlam's moniker but added that he would back the civil engineer as long as the public is consulted. Whitlam held the seat of Werriwa for 22 years, not far from Badgerys Creek.
