The Queensland government has revealed the Wivenhoe Dam will release water earlier to minimise potential flooding in the state's southeast. This forms part of Queensland's new operational strategies for the Wivenhoe, Somerset and North Pine dams to mitigate potential flooding ahead of the summer wet season. Wild weather has already hit the southeast of the state with the recent "supercell storm", that left thousands of residents without power, transport delays and a huge clean up costing more that $100 million. State water supply minister Mark McArdle said the North Pine Dam's maximum water supply storage would also be set at 90% for up to 20 years. He also revealed that the new Wivenhoe Dam strategy could result in some bridges, such as Colleges Crossing near Ipswich, being closed more regularly when there is flooding.
