John Holland pays out $484k in court

Two John Holland divisions have been fined a total of $360,000 as a result of a fatal incident on the Perth City Link Rail project almost three years ago. According to Comcare, the federal workplace health and safety authority, "an employee was struck and killed by an out of control hi-rail vehicle that had been manufactured by John Holland Rail". As the incident occurred in December 2011 at a John Holland workplace, the federal court found that John Holland Pty Ltd and John Holland Rail Pty Ltd breached the Occupational Health and Safety Act 1991 (Cth). Comcare revealed the court's findings were that: 1. "John Holland Pty Ltd failed to take all reasonably practicable steps to protect the health and safety of its employees and contractors 2. John Holland Rail Pty Ltd failed to take all reasonably practicable steps to ensure that manufactured plant was safe for employees."
